Planning and Sketching

A website is your platform online. It require some planning and sketching to come up with a website blueprint that connects all the things you do. This is where you present yourself, what you offer and connect to your Facebook page, Instagram, Youtube, Twitter or TikTok.

Content ideas

With a blueprint in mind, you can start form a plan and sketch out how you want your website to look like:

What is the niche, product and message you want to convey?
Your domain name, does it reflect the message your website conveys?
What sort of colors, images, videos, graphics and texts fit your products or niche?

These are important issues to think about because visitors arriving at your website judge the site on the look and feel before they even read the first letter of your head lines.

Colors, images, structure and atmosphere determine at the first glimpse whether a visitor finds your website inviting or not.

But, before they arrive at your website, a visitor has seen your website name, or domain name, indicating what it all is about. For example, www.nocodebusinessite.com, indicates it is about “no code” websites and business. If you can find such a combination for your niche, you are in a good place.

Of course, sometimes your personal name is the better choice, if you have personalized services, or perhaps your name combined with your trade will make a good choice.

Then it's time to decide what sort of website your want:

Do you want a blog?
Do you want visitors to subscribe to your blog or Newsletter?
Do you want a single-page website?
Do you want a multi-page website?
Do you want to sell stuff and run email campaigns?

Hu, that's a few questions, you might say. Yes, it is, but these things you have to think through sooner or later.

Waste of time

Many of us have skipped this phase and jumped right on to trial and test creation, just to end up with these same questions after a long while of wasting precious time.

Better consider these questions now, so you can better find the right design to build upon. This we will come back to in the next article.

Now that you might have some ideas of your niche, products, services, colors, imagery, perhaps now is a good time to start thinking of how to gather imagery, videos, sketches, illustrations, slideshows. Do you have some of them? Can you produce some of them? It's good to think and make notes of these things.

Structure and building blocks

We should turn our attention towards the infrastructure of your website.

A website consists of the content you create and Html code that binds the whole thing together. You will normally not see much Html code, but you need to know and understand that the website construction needs to be hosted in a place where the Html code can function as intended and show your delightedly designed and constructed website to the world. And, that place is called a Web-host.

There are many companies that host websites, they also offer email hosting and domain registration. They offer the three things needed to establish and run a website, as one packet: Domain, Email-hosting and web-hosting.

Some companies offer domain and email-hosting separate from the web-hosting. A website can be located anywhere on the internet, as long as the domain points to where the website is located. When the domain points to a website hosted outside of the registrator's servers, it's called, to use a custom domain, seen from the web-host that doesn't provide the the domain name.

Today we see a few companies that offer website-creation without coding. That is usually a different company than the one that hosts your email and functions as domain registrar. And it is a great opportunity for those who want to create and build their own website.

So, why would one want to build their own website?

There are many reasons for why.

People are people, and we are all different. Some people would like to create their own website just for the sake of doing it, to say to themselves, there you go, you did it.

Others are more curious and want to learn, and perhaps one day build websites for other people.

Others again look at the cost. If you want someone to design and create your website, you're looking at a substantial price tag for the project.

And, the price tag for a "done for you website," is probably what people look at, when deciding to do their website themselves, to achieve the result they need, on their budget.
